Low Water Pressure in the Whole House: Where It Goes
When every tap weakens together, the cause sits upstream of all of them: at the meter, the main line, a pressure valve, or inside aging pipes that feed the whole house.

Start with the split: whole house or one fixture
One weak tap is a local story: an aerator, a cartridge, a single run. Whole-house weakness is a supply story. That split decides everything that follows, so test a hose bib near the meter, a first-floor tap, and an upstairs shower before concluding anything. If the bib near the meter is strong and the house is weak, the loss happens between the meter and your fixtures. If everything including the bib is weak, the conversation starts with street pressure and the utility side.
The pressure-reducing valve nobody remembers
Many homes have a pressure-reducing valve, often near the main shutoff, that tames street pressure to a safe house level. When these valves age, they can fail toward closed and starve the whole house slowly, or fail open and hammer fixtures with pressure they were never meant to take. A gauge reading at an outside bib, taken in minutes, tells us which side of healthy your house sits on and whether the valve is the culprit.

Corrosion: the slow theft inside older pipes
Galvanized lines in DuPont-era Village and Rayon City homes rust from the inside, and the rust takes the pipe's diameter with it. Pressure fades over years, one shower at a time, until a home that once ran fine barely fills a tub. Copper develops its own version at bad junctions. No valve adjustment reverses a pipe that has narrowed to a straw; the honest fix is repiping the affected runs, scoped by testing rather than by fear.
When low pressure is actually a leak
A main line leaking underground spends your pressure in the yard before the house sees a drop. The signs travel together: pressure down, the meter moving with every tap closed, a wet patch that never dries, and a bill climbing while indoor use stays flat. That combination is a leak detection call, not a pressure complaint, and finding the spot before digging is what keeps the repair small.
What to check tonight, and when to call
Clean an aerator and note the change. Check that your main shutoff and any filter or softener valves are fully open; partly closed valves are a embarrassingly common cause. Read your pressure with a gauge if you have one. Then call (615) 583-1830 when the whole house is weak, when the meter moves at rest, or when pressure fell suddenly: sudden drops mean breaks, and breaks do not improve with waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions
What water pressure should a house have?
Most homes run comfortably in a moderate band, roughly 40 to 60 PSI at the fixtures. Well below that, showers and fill times suffer; well above it, pipes, heaters, and appliance valves wear early.
Can a water softener or filter cause whole-house pressure loss?
Yes. A clogged sediment filter or a softener valve fault restricts everything downstream of it. If pressure fell after a filter's service date passed, that unit is a prime suspect.
Is low pressure ever the city's problem?
Sometimes. If the hose bib at the meter is weak too, street pressure or the meter itself may be involved. We test at the meter first so you know whose side of the line owns the problem.
Will repiping really restore pressure?
Where corrosion narrowed the lines, yes, the change is usually obvious the first shower after. Where the cause is a valve or a leak, those fixes come first and repiping stays off the table.
Sudden pressure drop overnight: emergency?
Treat a sudden whole-house drop as urgent, especially with a moving meter or a wet yard. That pattern is a break until proven otherwise, and breaks flood quietly.
